One of the country’s leading agriculture states, Nebraska also puts a solid emphasis on post-graduate education. The state features both the University of Nebraska system, which includes five different campuses, and the Nebraska State College system, which features three different state colleges. There state is also home to eight community college campuses and 15 private, not-for-profit colleges and universities.

Lincoln. Home to the state’s flagship public university, the University of Nebraska, Lincoln is also the state capital. The city is the second most populous in the state with more than 258,000 residents. Originally founded in 1856 as Lancaster, the name was changed after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The newly renamed city was made the capital following Nebraska’s admission to the Union in 1867. Today, Lincoln’s economy revolves around state government and the University of Nebraska.

Omaha. The state’s largest city is home to more than 408,000 people and has more colleges and universities that any other city in the state. The city earned its nickname, Gateway to the West, because of the Lone Tree Ferry crossing on the Missouri River that was established in 1850, where present-day Omaha lies. The area was an important stop for early pioneers. The city also ranks in the top 10 among the country’s 50 largest cities in both billionaires and Fortune 500 companies per capita.

Bellevue. With a population of more than 50,100 people, Bellevue has seen rapid growth recently thanks to an expanding economy. Commercial building along the Kennedy Freeway and the recently opened Bellevue Medical Center have created several new jobs in the area. The city was founded on a fur trading post in the early 1800s. Bellevue is also the home of Offutt Air Force Base. The base sparked rapid growth in the small town when it was built during World War II to house the Martin bomber plant. The base was also home to the Strategic Air Command.
