Macalester College Joins the Online Revolution

Macalester College, a private, liberal arts school in St. Paul, Minn., has decided to offer its first for-credit online course. The class, "Calculus: a Modeling Approach," will be open to all students attending an Associate College of the Midwest school.

A Macalester faculty task force will spend the remainder of the year working out the specifics of how to recreate the small class size and personalized learning environment that Macalester is known for online. In addition to common aspects of online education, such as live lectures and interactive course material, task force members have discussed including video conference office hours and weekly tutoring sessions.

To preserve the intimate, seminar-like nature of the course administration officials expect enrollment in the course to be capped at around 20 students. The class is being developed in association with St. Olaf College, a private liberal arts school in Northfield, Minn.
