VMware Offers edX Computer Science Students Free Virtualization Software
Software company VMware and massive open online course (MOOC) provider edX have partnered to provide students enrolled in a computer science class offered through the platform with free virtualization software.
Students taking CS50x: introduction to computer science, which is a HarvardX class, will receive copies of VMware Fusion and VMware Workstation 9 for free for the duration of the class. The software suites will allow course instructor David Malan to standardize the course content by creating a preconfigured virtual machine for students, regardless of whether they use Linux, Mac, or Windows.
The class, which is an entry level course, is designed to teach students, who may or may not have any programming experience, how to think algorithmically about topics like data structures, encapsulation, resource management, and web development.
