The third most-populous state in the country, New York is home to some of the country's most esteemed colleges and universities. The State University of New York (SUNY) controls all of the state's public colleges and universities, with the exception of the City University of New York (CUNY). The CUNY operates independent of the SUNY system, controlling all New York City colleges and universities. The SUNY system features top-ranked schools like Binghampton University, Stony Brook University, SUNY Genesseo, and SUNY New Paltz. The CUNY system is the largest urban university in the United States and encompasses 11 senior colleges, six community colleges, a doctoral graduate school, a journalism school, a law school, and a biomedical education campus.
