The state of New Jersey has a long history dating back to being one of the original 13 colonies. The state places a strong emphasis on post-secondary education and offers 31 four-year colleges and universities, and an additional 19 public community colleges. Prospective students hoping to take a more non-traditional approach can choose from 11 different institutions that offer online college courses in New Jersey. The state is also home to the world renown Princeton University, which is regarded as one of the nation's best universities.

Jersey City. The state’s second most-populous city with more than 240,000 residents, Jersey city lies across the Hudson river and Upper New York bay from New York City. The city features 11 miles of waterfront and several major rail connections. It is an important distribution center for the Port of New York and New Jersey.

• Hudson County Community College. One of the many schools to be a part of New Jersey’s county community college system, Hudson County Community College is a two-year school offering certificate, and associate degrees. Students can take classes both online, or in-person, in variety of programs including information technology, health care, legal studies, and more.
• New Jersey City University. One of the nine different four-year state schools, New Jersey City University offers bachelor’s, master’s, and post-master’s certificate degrees to its 8,517 students. The school offers a variety of programs in biology, education, communications, and many others.
• PC Age – Jersey City. This two-year, for-profit school offers certificate programs to its 110 students. Prospective students can choose from programs in either computer systems networking, or medical office assisting.
• Saint Peter's College. Founded in 1872, Saint Peter's College is one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States, and is the only in New Jersey. The school has an enrollment of more than 3,000 students and offers more than 40 undergraduate programs. In addition to its undergraduate programs, the school also offers master's and doctoral degree programs. Students can choose from classes and programs in biology, mathematics, psychology, and many more.
• University of Phoenix – Jersey City. One of the nation's largest for-profit universities, the University of Phoenix's Jersey City campus has an in-person enrollment of 585 students, but has thousands more students taking classes online. The Jersey City campus offers several bachelor's and master's degree programs in accounting, business, information technology, education, healthcare, and more.

Newark. The largest city in the state of New Jersey with more than 277,140, the city of Newark is located in a densely populated part of the country. It is lies just eight miles west of Manhattan. Originally founded in 1666 by Connecticut Puritans, the city has rapidly grown since the late 1700s and is home the corporate home to several major corporations including Prudential Financial and Panasonic, among others.

• Essex County College. Part of the New Jersey county college system, Essex County College offers certificate and associate degrees to its 13,424 students. Prospective students can choose from several programs in biology, engineering, liberal arts, and many more.
• New Jersey Institute of Technology. One of the state's three public research universities, the New Jersey Institute of Technology offers 92 degree programs in 27 different undergraduate majors, and 30 different graduate specialties. The school opened its doors in 1881 with 88 students as the Newark Technical School. The institution is now home to more than 8,900 students and is known for its research capabilities in fields like stem cell research, nanotechnology, and polymer science. The school offers programs and majors in architecture, computer science, engineering, and many others.
• Rutgers University – Newark. Part of the State University of New Jersey system, Rutgers University offers three different campuses across the state, including Newark. The Newark Campus has an enrollment of 11,798 students and offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in programs like business, journalism, social science, and many more.
• University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The second of New Jersey's three public research universities to be located in Newark, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey features an extensive network of healthcare programs. The institution offers certificate, associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees to its 6,813 students. The healthcare specific school includes programs in biology, biomedical engineering, dentistry, and many different types of medicine.

New Brunswick. Home to the main campus of Rutgers University, New Brunswick lies on the southern bank of the Raritan River. The city of Piscataway sits directly across the river and contains several other Rutgers campus buildings. The city his home to more than 55,000 residents and is known as "The Healthcare City" because of its heavy concentration of medical facilities in the area.

• Rutgers University – New Brunswick. Rutgers University's New Brunswick location is made up of three different campuses, including the seat of the university system, the College Avenue Campus.
