Online College Courses in Chemistry
Chemistry is an extremely versatile field of knowledge, used in hundreds of professions, from pharmaceutical development to culinary arts. The level of familiarity you should have with chemistry will largely be defined by what major (and what career) you are pursuing, but almost every major requires at least one natural science credit, and chemistry is one of the primary options.
Because chemistry fulfills part of what are generally called the "core" requirements of any degree plan, taking an online college chemistry course is an excellent alternative to the more expensive traditional face-to-face university classes. Online college courses in chemistry will typically cover the same material that students would encounter in an introductory-level chemistry survey, and they will emphasize topics like bonding and molecular structure, the periodic table, chemical kinetics and equilibrium, entropy, chemical equations, solids, gases, liquids, acids, bases, and chemical reactions. Students majoring in softer sciences, such as nutrition, health, environmental science, or physical science, will usually be required to take classes at this level, but nothing beyond it. High school students can also take some online chemistry courses for college credit to give them a head start when they begin their college career.
Students in the harder sciences, however, such as pharmacy or chemical engineering, will need to continue their learning with upper-level chemistry classes. Online chemistry courses at this level will cover more advanced topics, like molecular geometry, stoichiometry, thermochemistry and thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and organic chemistry. Anything beyond these more advanced online college chemistry courses is generally only offered at a traditional institution, where students have access to resources like chemistry labs.
Chemistry and Your Career
Chemistry is used in many different scientific fields, so a solid foundation in chemistry is necessary for success in the arena. The early survey classes teach the most important elements of chemistry and give students a fundamental understanding of chemistry, which can then be leveraged in a number of different ways. To work as a pharmacist, a student would need to know principles of compounds, equilibrium, chemical bonding, and other rules of chemical behavior. Similarly, chemical engineers — who convert raw materials into commercial or industrial products — must have a deep understanding of chemical reactions, thermochemistry, and so on. Even chefs have a firm grasp of chemical properties, such as acidity, and their effect on the cooking process. The basic skill set is critical because it acts as the general base on which students can continue to build more specific expertise.
