Students participating in the university's multi-tiered,Student Success Initiative have been using Pearson's products. The nine-part initiative utilizes customized Pearson modules to create a semester-long, first-year seminar entitled "University 1301: Introduction to Collegiate Studies."

The elective course is designed to help students adjust to SHSU by offering online courses about the school's freshman learning community, 'Read to Succeed' program, 'student lingo' as well as a 'new student convocation.'
